VFR over-the-top rating
Once you have a private pilot license, you can continue training to achieve a VFR OTT Rating, which allows you to fly over broken or overcast clouds between you and your destination, provided that you don't have to fly through them to get there. Though not necessary, it can be a stepping stone towards an instrument rating.
VFR Over-The-Top Rating requirements
Private Pilot License
15 hours total instrument flying time of which 5 can be ground instrument (simulator)
**Instrument flight training accomplished in obtaining a Private Pilot License or night rating may be credited towards VFR-OTT
**Commercial pilots and Instrument rated pilots have VFR-OTT privileges as part of their license/rating.
Ground School
There is no ground school requirement. However, there will be sufficient ground briefing to include the following items:
Canadian Aviation Regulations
Airspace
Weather reports as applied to VFR-OTT
Review of elements of instrument flying exercises
Use, navigation, and basic principles of operation for ADF, VOR and GPS equipment
Tests
There is no written or flight test but applicants should meet the standard for knowledge and skill specified on the "Instructor Guide - VFR Over-The-Top Rating”

Dual C172M - 6 hours $1338.00
Simulator - 4 hours $540.00
Ground Brief - 6 hours $390 .00

Books and Supplies
Students should have already all required supplies from their PPL training.
Books and Supplies can be purchased directly from any aviation supply shop or through the flying club
